Lot 351

Description:
Cromwell's Jack: A leather jug deemed to be of great historic interest and featured on the BBC1 Antiques Roadshow in 2011 where it was judged by expert John Foster to be one of the few made from Cromwell's horse. With connections to the Hoare family of bankers and Stourhead house, this jug was kept at the vendor's great-grandfather's home in Stoke Gabriel, Devon, and previously in bank vaults. Described by John Foster in the Daily Telegraph as "the most exciting find in years", he is also quoted as saying "The great thing about this is obviously Cromwell - one of the most controversial political and military figures in English History". The vendor advises that the jug has been in the family for generations, believed to have been deposited in C Hoare & Co Bank in London by one of Cromwell's daughters and kept in their bank vaults.
